A massive school of sockeye salmon began flooding the Kenai River early this week, and soon after, seemingly half the cars heading south on the Seward highway had long-handled gill nets attached to their ski racks.

Bar brawl nets one arrest

A bartender at the Homestead Lounge on Regency Drive called 911 to report a large group of people fighting around 3 a.m. on July 9, Anchorage police said.

About 10 officers including units that drove up from Anchorage responded to find 20 people involved in the brawl, police spokesman Lt. David Parker said. He didn't know what triggered the fight.

The National Transportation Safety Board last week launched a study into the safety of experimental aircraft, the so-called "homebuilt" planes favored by some Birchwood Airport pilots and a growing number of enthusiasts in the Lower 48.

 

An early-morning car accident near North Birchwood Loop on Tuesday left an 18-year-old Chugiak man in critical condition at an Anchorage hospital.

Anchorage Police Department Lt. Dave Parker said Tyler Shaf, 18, was flown by Life Flight helicopter for emergency surgery after suffering head injuries in the accident, which occurred at around 6 a.m.
