Chugiak senior Duncan Keith runs the 800 at the ASD 8x8 meet March 31 at The Dome. Keith, a senior, will participate in the invitation-only pentathlon at the Big “C” Relays on April 13-14.

Tyler Rohde won both hurdle events and Chris Kveseth won the 400-meter dash to help Chugiak’s boys track and field team finish third at the Anchorage School District 8x8 meet at The Dome on March 30-31.

Dimond swept both team titles while West came in second in the girls and boys team standings.

Rohde won the 110 hurdles in 15.15 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 41.16.

Kveseth won the 400 in 52.78, beating Dimond’s Stanson Afoa by 0.73 seconds. Kveseth also took third in the 800 and was part of Chugiak’s third-place 4x200 relay team with Rohde, Jacob Wenzl and Tyler Carnahan. The foursome came in ahead of Eagle River (Ed Hall, Brandon King, Edward Massey and Stephen Wescott), which finished fourth.

Eagle River’s boys finished eighth as a team.

Chugiak sophomore Tim Sorensen placed third in the 3,200 just six seconds behind first-place Mason Huffman of South and one second behind Service’s Taylor Turney in second. Eagle River freshman Ben Hall finished fourth.

Sorensen also placed third in the 1,600.

Chugiak’s Duncan Keith took third in the high jump and long jump.

Chugiak freshman Rachel Gregg won the girls’ long jump ahead of teammate Alex Collins to help the Mustangs to a fifth-place finish as a team. Eagle River’s girls finished sixth.

Local long jumpers claimed five of the top six places in the girls’ long jump. Eagle River’s Scout Warners finished third and Chugiak’s Alicia Reitz and Savannah Nelson finished fourth and sixth, respectively.

Gregg and Warners tied for fourth in the high jump and Nelson took fifth.

Warners also turned in a third-place finish in the 400 ahead of teammate Nikki Boggs in fourth.

Chugiak junior Kenzie Matthis finished second to Service’s Dajanae Harris in the 100.

Eagle River sophomore Kate Mondl took second in the 800 and 1,600. Sarah Freistone of Dimond won both events.

The next official meet will be the Big “C” Relays on April 13-14 at The Dome. Keith, a senior, will be one of six competing in the pentathlon, which includes the shot put, high jump, 100, 300 hurdles and 800.

Keith said Chugiak head coach Jon Schroeder told him he was selected for the pentathlon prior to running the 800 at the ASD 8x8 meet.

“I’m excited for him,” Schroeder said. “He’s worked really hard. It’s gonna be fun to see him compete.”

After watching others take part in the event the past three years, Keith said he wanted to give it a try.

“It looked fun,” he said. “I’m pretty good at most things, so I thought I’d give it a shot.”
