Emily Walsh used a dominant freestyle leg to edge teammate Claire Nelson and win the girls title at the A/B Skiathlon cross-country ski races Saturday at a chilly Kincaid Park in Anchorage.

The duo’s 1-2 finish helped lift the Eagle River girls to a girls team victory over second-place West at the annual dual-technique races.

Walsh trailed Nelson by more than six seconds as skiers entered the transition zone, where skiers swapped out their classic skis after a 4.4-kilometer leg and snapped on freestyle skis for a a 5.5-kilometer skate leg. That’s where Walsh shined, posting the day’s fastest freestyle split to win the race in 37 minutes, 31.4 seconds. Nelson was nearly 25 seconds behind in second, with West’s Maria Nedom a distant third.

Chugiak’s Hannah Cryder finished fifth and Kiley Dennis was sixth for the fifth-place Mustangs.

Race-time temperatures were just above the minus-5 degree cutoff needed for racing and racers wrapped themselves in blankets until moments before the start of each race.

The Chugiak boys finished second in the team standings behind Dimond, which also got a 1-2 finish from Peter Hinds and Nils Kolb.

Mikey Connelly was fourth to lead the Mustangs, with Porter Blei finishing second and Konrad Renner eighth.

Alex Carl finished 14th to lead the Eagle River boys.
