Wednesday town hall in Chugiak kicks off flurry of public meetings
It’s meeting time.
A flurry of public meetings are planned in the first half of January as groups return to regular schedules following the holiday break and planning begins for the municipal budget process.
On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Anchorage Assembly will hold a special public forum at Chugiak High to discuss Anchorage’s fiscal situation. The meeting was called in order to gauge public opinion on the upcoming budget, according to Assembly Chair Felix Rivera.
“The rationale is we wanted to hear as much opinion from the public as possible before Jan. 14,” Rivera said last week.
The meeting in Chugiak was one of three called by the assembly; another will be held Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Loussac Library in Anchorage with a third scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Girdwood Community Room in Girdwood.
Wednesday’s public meeting forced the cancellation of the Eagle River Valley Community Council meeting, though the Birchwood Community Council meeting at Beach Lake Park will be held as scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
On Thursday, both the Eagle River Community Council and South Fork Community Council will meet, both at 7 p.m. The Eagle River council meets in the Eagle River Town Center building (12001 Business Boulevard), while the South Fork council meets at Eagle River High.
On Monday, Jan. 13, the Eagle River-Chugiak Parks and Recreation Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. in the Town Center building. Among the board’s current topics of discussion are ongoing efforts to bring a dog park to the area, a proposal to create a conservation easement at Beach Lake Park and rebuilding efforts from the Nov. 30, 2018 earthquake. Meetings are open to the public and more information can be found on the Municipality of Anchorage website.
On Tuesday, Jan. 14, three area legislators will meet with local constituents in advance of the upcoming legislative session, which begins later this month in Juneau. The meeting was planned by Sen. Lora Reinbold and Reps. Kelly Merrick and Sharon Jackson of Eagle River. The meeting is scheduled from 6-8 p.m.
The Chugiak Community Council will meet on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Elsie Oberg Center on the Old Glenn Highway in Chugiak.
For folks in Chugiak, Sen. Shelley Hughes (District F) and Rep. Cathy Tilton (District 12) will be meeting with constituents Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Chugiak Cafe at 9:30 a.m.
Finally, on Jan. 27, the Chugiak-Birchwood-Eagle River Rural Road Service Area (CBERRRSA) board of supervisors will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagle River Town Center building. The board makes decisions about road issues in Chugiak-Eagle River, which has its own assessment district for local street and road maintenance.
