CER girls hockey team uses brick wall, scoring machine to stymie Dimond/West
Chugiak/Eagle River used a scoring machine and a brick wall to upset Dimond/West Friday in an Anchorage Girls High School Hockey League clash at the Dempsey Anderson Ice Arena in Anchorage.
Rian Runyan scored all five CER goals — including the game-winner with 2:54 left to break a 4-4 tie — and goalie Morgan Richards made 38 saves to preserve the win. Runyan has scored 13 goals this season for the girls team, which improved to 3-4-0 heading into the holiday break.
The team is experiencing a renaissance this year, one season after finishing 0-9-0 while getting outscored 61-8. With three games to play in the regular season, Chugiak/Eagle River is in third place and averaging more than three goals per game.
Dimond/West led 2-1 after the first period Friday night on goals by McKenna Piekarski and Khenzie Connick, but Runyan’s three goals and Richards’ 19 saves on 20 shots in the frame made it 4-3 CER heading into the third.
Dimond/West tied things up with 6:32 left on Piekarski’s second goal of the game to set the stage for Runyan’s game-winner.
Bailey Reynolds notched an assist for Chugiak/Eagle River.
Chugiak/Eagle River is off until Friday, Jan. 10, when the team takes on Service/West under the lights at the Mulcahy Stadium outdoor ice rink at 7 p.m.
