Local girls claim 3 CIC wrestling titles
Three local wrestlers claimed Cook Inlet Conference titles at the CIC Girls Wrestling Tournament Saturday at South High.
Eagle River’s Ashley Andrews improved to 25-2 this season by winning two matches to win the championship in the 112-pound weight class Saturday. Andrews pinned South’s Maggie Keffalos in the semifinals and beat West’s Carson Adams 10-3 in the championship match.
Chugiak’s Nicole Lewis and Eagle River’s Jacqueline DeMers also claimed CIC titles Saturday. Lewis defeated South’s Victoriah Haakenson in their finals match in the 135-pound weight class and DeMers was unopposed at 235.
The top two wrestlers in each weight class earn automatic berths to the state tournament Dec. 20-21 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. Also earning an automatic berth was Eagle River’s AJ Pennington, who placed second at 103 pounds.
Chugiak’s Gia Unterberger was fourth at 112 pounds and Sydney Kelley was sixth at 145 pounds.
East won the team title by five points over second-place South. Eagle River placed fifth and Chugiak was seventh.
