Chugiak’s Niebles, Eagle River’s Hamilton win CIC wrestling titles

Chugiak’s Daniel Niebles got a repeat and Eagle River’s Andrew Hamilton got some redemption Saturday at the Cook Inlet Confernce Wrestling Tournament at South High.

Niebles won his second straight CIC championship at 189 pounds, while Hamilton claimed the 171-pound title one season after falling in the 215-pound finals.

Niebles improved to 39-0 this season by defeating East’s Daniel Mokom 4-2 in the finals Saturday. The match was the only challenge for the senior, who pinned his first three tournament opponents en route to the finals.

Hamilton earned a bye to the 171-pound semifinals, where the top seed bested South’s James Shivers to reach the finals. There, Hamilton needed just 1:26 to pin Service’s Joshua Zong for his first CIC championship.

Chugiak’s Tristan Petrykievicz also reached the finals Saturday, losing 17-5 to South’s Theo Cha in the championship match at 140 pounds to claim second place.

The top six placewinners in each weight class qualified for the state tournament next weekened in Anchorage. Eagle River will send eight wrestlers to state and Chugiak qualified six.

Hamilton was the lone Eagle River wrestler to make the finals, but 135-pounder Gabriel Wisdom also finished his tournament with a victory by knocking off West’s Thaddeus Williams in their third-place match. James Salter finished fourth at 160 pounds for the Wolves, Jalen Frederick (140 pounds) and Josh Lewandowski (130) placed fifth; and Ian Novotny (103 pounds), Kameron Potter (119) and Avery White (125) placed sixth.

In addition to Niebles and Petrykievicz, the Mustangs’ Calvin Daugherty placed third at 145 pounds, Grant Jones was fourth at 152, Colton Bobo was fifth at 145 and Daniel Brooks finished sixth at 152.

South ran away with the team title, scoring 457 points to nearly double up second-place East (230). Chugiak finsihed fifth and Eagle River was sixth in the team standings.

The state wrestling tournament will be held Dec. 20-21 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. An official list of qualifiers and seedings will be released on the Alaska School Activities Association website.
