Tie gets the Rumbler.

Chugiak retook the Rumble Cup trophy for the first time since 2015 by the thinnest of margins Wednesday night, tying Eagle River 30-30 in a dual wrestling meet at CHS to win the annual crosstown rivalry in a tiebreaker.

Chugiak won four of the first five matches of the evening, including a forfeit at 140 pounds and decisions for Calvin Daugherty (145), Daniel Brooks (152) and Grant Jones (160). After an Eagle River forfeit at 171 pounds, the Mustangs pushed their lead to 18-6 after Daniel Niebles defeated Andrew Hamilton by a 7-0 score at 189 pounds.

An Eagle River forfeit at 215 pounds was followed by a Chugiak pin from Kohlter Mariscal at 285 to make it 24-12 with six matches to go.

The Wolves made things interesting by winning four of the final six matches, including a forfeit at 103 pounds, a pin by Karmeron Potter at 119 pounds and decisions by Josh Lewandowski (130) and Gabriel Wisdom (135) to close out the match.

But Chugiak’s Cade Kohler won a 2-1 decision over Avery White at 125 pounds to stem the Eagle River tide and give Chugiak just enough cushion to preserve the win. The Mustangs were awarded the victory by virtue of winning eight matches to the Wolves’ six.

Eagle River won the annual Rumble Cup dual in 2016 and ‘17 and kept the trophy last year when the meet was cancelled due to the Nov. 30 earthquake.

Chugiak and Eagle River will participate in the Grace Grizzly Shakedown Friday and Saturday at Grace Christian School in Anchorage. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. both days. For updates and results, visit trackwrestling.com.
