Police arrested a 25-year-old Anchorage man on a third-degree assault charge on Saturday after he allegedly pointed a rifle at another motorist on the Glenn Highway.

According to Anchorage Police, officers were called at around 5 p.m. Saturday to the home of a man who said he had a gun pointed at him during a “road rage” incident. Police said the man told them he was driving southbound on the Glenn Highway near the Knik River Bridge when he saw a black Chevy Impala driving aggressively in his rearview mirror.

Police said the man told them the Impala started to “tailgate” him, at which point he saw the driver — later identified as Michael R. Widemann Jr., — point a rifle at him. The man said Wideman then pulled alongside his vehicle and again pointed the gun at him.

“The victim sped up in an attempt to get away;” police wrote in a synopsis of the incident. “Widemann caught up, matched the victim’s speed, and pointed the gun a third time. The victim then slammed on his breaks [sic], allowed Widemann to get ahead of him, and then stayed several vehicles behind Widemann’s Impala.”

Police said officers located Widemann on the Glenn Highway near the North Eagle River exit and took him and the rifle into custody. Police said there was no indication the victim or Widemann knew each other before the incident.
