Wolves, Mustangs beat up on Thunderbirds in Legion baseball play
Chugiak and Eagle River beat up on East in Alaska American Legion Baseball games over the weekend, with the Post 33 Mustangs hammering the Thunderbirds 12-0 on Saturday at Oberg Field and Eagle River handing East a 15-9 loss Sunday at Bartlett High.
Orazio Ramos drove in four runs in Eagle River’s win, with Damien Frederick driving in three. Noah Lower tripled twice and scored three runs for the Wolves, who scored seven runs in the second inning and six in the fifth.
The win was a rebound for the Wolves, who went 0-4 at the Bill Miller Big Fish tournament over the Independence Day holiday in Kenai. The Wolves fell 12-2 to the host Post 20 Twins before dropping a 19-0 decision to a visiting team from Rhode Island and falling 9-6 to the Napoleon Ohio River Bandits. Devin Wilcox went 3 for 4 in the Ohio loss, with Lower and Ramos picking up two hits each. Eagle River lost the final game of the tournament 14-2 to the Twins on July 4.
Through July 8, the Wolves were 4-10 in Alaska Legion Baseball games and 5-17 overall. Eagle River will host first-place Wasilla (12-0 league, 20-3 overall) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12 at Loretta French Park in Chugiak.
Chugiak took little time dispatching the Thunderbirds on Saturday, putting up six runs in each of the first two innings to cruise to a 12-0 win. The victory lifted the Mustangs to 8-2 in the league, good enough for third place behind Wasilla and Juneau.
Chugiak plays Bartlett on July 10. The Mustangs will face the first-place Road Warriors on Thursday, July 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Wasilla.
