Chinooks rock Miners in advance of opening night at Lee Jordan Field
Yeah, who? Mat-Su?
Chugiak-Eagle River spoiled the home opener for the defending Alaska Baseball League champions Wednesday night, getting a five-run fifth inning to send the defending league champion Mat-Su Miners to a 10-2 defeat at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
Outfielder Haden Keller of Mendocino College went 3-for-4 with a home run to lead the Chinooks, who pounded out 12 hits, including two each from Brandon Cody (Biola College) and Jess Davis (University of Alabama-Birmingham).
Four Chinooks relievers combined for seven innings of scoreless relief, with Trinity University right-hander Justin Fox giving up one hit and striking out three in three innings of work to earn the win.
Chugiak-Eagle River (1-0) will play its home opener tonight against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots (0-0) at 7 p.m. at Lee Jordan Field at Loretta French Park in Chugiak. All Chinooks games are free admission, and Thursday’s game will honor the field’s namesake during a ceremony before the game. Jordan — a longtime local baseball supporter and the former publisher and editor of the Star — died in January at the age of 88.
