Chugiak girls open with win at Dimond hoops tourney

Chugiak advanced to the “Gold” bracket at the Dimond Lady Lynx Prep Shootout girls basketball tournament Wednesday night at Dimond High with a 41-38 overtime win over Lathrop.

Caitlin Wachmann scored four of her eight points in overtime and Eva Palmer was 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the extra period. Cheyenne Young led Chugiak with 11 points, Chasity Horn and Ari Lewis had seven each and Palmer scored five.

Olivia Kraska scored a game-high 14 points for the Malemutes.

The Mustangs will play West at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Dimond.

Wolves swept by Dimond

Eagle River dropped a pair of Cook Inlet Conference basketball games to Dimond Tuesday at Eagle River.

Grace Harder scored 12 points and six rebounds to lead the Eagle River girls in a 60-24 loss to the Lynx. Paige Sharpe added four points for the Wolves, who also got three points and two rebounds from Kamryn Perry.

In the boys game, Ryan Adkins scored a game-high 20 points for the Wolves in a 70-44 defeat to Dimond.
