PREP HOCKEY: Wolves, Mustangs post wins over West
Eagle River rebounded from back-to-back losses with a 2-1 comeback win over West in a nonconference prep hockey game Saturday, Nov. 17 at Ben Boeke Ice Arena in Anchorage.
The Wolves trailed 1-0 heading into the third period, but got a pair of power play goals in the final minutes to grab the win in a game that marred by a postgame fight.
CIC leading scorer Ty McEnaney scored the game-tying goal with 4:35 to play off assists from Tay Kurpius and Aidan Burton. The Wolves went in front for good on a Brayden Rachow goal off an assist from Logan Dudinsky.
Brenden Whetsell made 16 saves in goal for Eagle River, which was outshot 21-18.
West’s Cyril Boots and Eagle River’s Skylar Johnson received disqualifications — Boots for fighting and Johnson for slashing — at the end of the game and will each miss their team’s next contest.
Eagle River (3-2) is off until Dec. 4, when the Wolves return to Cook Inlet Conference play with a clash against rival Chugiak at 7:15 p.m. at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.
South 5, Eagle River 3
The Wolves dropped their second straight CIC game with a 5-3 loss to undefeated South Nov. 14 at Ben Boeke.
Tyh McEnaney, Aidan Burton and Brayden Rachow scored for the Wolves, who got 29 saves from Ryan Gray.
Mustangs knock off Eagles
Four different players scored in Chugiak’s 4-1 nonconference hockey win over West Nov. 15 at Ben Boeke.
Noah Denny, Cullen McCormick, Jacob Kosinski and Luke Momblow found the net for the Mustangs, who outshot the Eagles 27-8. Momblow also had two assists for Chugiak, which played Bartlett on Tuesday, Nov. 20. A score was not available by press time, but check alaskastar.com for updates.
Following the Bartlett game, Chugiak is off until a Dec. 1 match-up against Dimond at 7:15 p.m. at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.
Chugiak/Eagle River fell to 0-3 with an 8-0 girls hockey loss to South/Bartlett on Friday at the Dempsey-Anderson Ice Arena in Anchorage.
Nicole Ness had a hat trick for South/Bartlett, which improved to 3-0 and outshot Chugiak/Eagle River 27-13.
Chugiak/Eagle River will face Service/East on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Dempsey-Anderson.
