Niebles leads Chugiak at Lancer Smith tourney

Chugiak finished 19th and Eagle River was 29th at the 43-team Lancer Smith Memorial Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Menard Center in Wasilla.

Daniel Niebels led the Mustangs with a third-place finish at 189 pounds. Niebles beat Eagle River’s Andrew Hamilton in the quarterfinals before getting pinned by Glennallen’s Caden Gerlach in the semis. Niebles rallied for back-to-back pins over Eielson’s Nephi Tidwell and Kotzebue’s Ethan Roetman to earn third place.

Hamilton was the only other local wrestler to make the podium, finishing sixth at 189. Hamilton pinned Lathrop’s Sean Michel and Thunder Mountain’s Camden Erickson before losing to Roetman and Tidwell in the consolation round.

South won the team title with 268 points to outdistance Colony (219.5) and Lathrop (183).

DeMers leads local girls

The Eagle River girls were 22nd and Chugiak finished 27th at the Lancer Smith Memorial girls wrestling tournament, which was also held at the Menard Center in Wasilla.

Jacqueline DeMers led Eagle River with a fifth-place finish at 235 pounds. Demers pinned Bethel’s Alexis Kinegak to reach the semifinals. The Wolves’ Kyla Trout went 3-2 in the tournament and scored four team points for the Wolves.

Mt. Edgecumbe won the tournament with 113 points tol hold off North Pole (93) and Lathrop (84).
