LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Community support inspires
I’m inspired. I am the nurse at Chugiak Elementary.
I arrived at work this morning (Nov. 5) to a healthy breakfast for all staff provided by ACF Church. There is a note which reads, “Thank you for investing in our children”. Shortly thereafter, Mary Meechum from the Lions Club signs in to photo screen over 100 students. Mary mentions that the new photoscreening machine is wonderful and her club raised over $8,000 to cover the cost.
Fifteen minutes pass and my friends Annette Brion and Cydnee Gruszynski show up to shuffle all the kids up and down halls to be photoscreened. It is now 10:30 a.m, Jamey Reed stops by the office to ask if there is a family her ladies group from church can sponser for Christmas.
The week prior, Shannon Zink and Leslie Bobo, among so many others, invested over 60 man hours in our extremely successful Halloween Carnival. Every week we have volunteers photocopying, binding, laminating, sharpening pencils, popping popcorn, chaperoning field trips, shelving library books and helping kids and teachers with various needs. We live in an unusually supportive community. I am truly thankful for each and every volunteer.
