The Chugiak High School Mustangs girls soccer team rebounded from their second loss of the season with a 9-0 thrashing of the Bartlett High School Golden Bears in action April 24 at the Anchorage Football Stadium.

Head coach Dan Pinkerton said the team regrouped nicely after an unexpected setback by the pesky West High Eagles, 3-1, April 21.

The Mustangs scored first against the Eagles, with junior standout Alev Kelter, giving the defending state champions a momentary 1-0 lead midway through the first half. West responded with three unanswered goals for the victory.

Chugiak commanded play against Bartlett, with a 5-0 onslaught by the end of the first half, including three goals by freshman star Kelly Cobb.

“I pulled her out of the game pretty early,” said Pinkerton.

With sisters Alev and Derya Kelter out of the lineup, along with a couple of injuries, the longtime coach shifted around his lineup bringing senior captain Alison Oien up in the offensive formation from defense to midfield.

“That’s where she’ll play for Colorado (School of Mines), up as an attacking midfielder,” said Pinkerton.

Oien responded with two goals, as did senior forward Sarah Watzke.

Marti Maley and Kendra Bulawa each added a goal in the Mustang’s rout of the Golden Bears, the coach reported.

Pinkerton had been hoping to get a couple of games in early this week, prior to the team flying out to California for a pair of games in the San Francisco area.

The team returns to a full docket of games next week, with East Monday, 5 p.m. at Eagle River High; Dimond, Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Eagle River; and South, May 11, 11 a.m. at AFS.
