My name is Leilani Mahi. I am representing Gruening Middle School, Mrs. Otte's class. I am writing to inform the people of Alaska about underage drinking. One out of five drinks in Alaska is consumed by a minor.
For all the legal drinkers out there, minors' possession makes alcohol cost more for adults. In Anchorage and Eagle River alone, 25 to 30 minors are caught drinking weekly. That is a lot of minors drinking, and these are the only ones that get caught.
Also, alcohol is the No. 1 date rape drug, and Alaska is No. 1 in sexual assault.
As you can see, these connections are not good. This is why Gruening Middle School is asking for public support to educate the community, because we want to help Alaska.
This is our chance to do our part in promoting awareness and to hopefully make some impact to the adults supplying those minors with alcohol; as well as telling teenagers to show responsibility and accountability for their actions when they drink, as underage drinking is obviously illegal and needs to continue to be strictly enforced.
