Chugiak fire department called out
the Alaska Star
The Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire at 18161 Old Glenn Highway at 1:30 p.m. March 8. A detached garage had caught fire. Department spokesman Jeff Hartley said the fire appeared to have started after the owner was welding or cutting on a utility trailer inside the garage, and then left the building. Someone inside the house noticed smoke and called the fire department. Firefighters were able to save the home, but the garage suffered some damage, mainly to the roof. The walls were still standing and the majority of the garage contents were salvageable. The Chugiak Fire Department had six trucks on scene and called for assistance from the Eagle River Fire Department, which sent two more trucks. No injuries were reported. The area was cleared by about 5:30 p.m.
