Support local business in time of need
I am a resident of downtown Eagle River. Last week a dear friend of mine Teri Mize, owner of the beloved downtown bookshop AppleTree, was robbed at knife-point. I was saddened and shocked by this news – sad that such a terrible thing happened to such a wonderful and integral part of our community. Teri is a strong woman, however, so I am comforted by the strength she showed and the quick work by the police officers who came to her aid.
I am disheartened by the fact that some patrons have decided to stop frequenting her shop and story times in reaction to the event. In times like these we need to come together as a community and support our friends and neighbors, not shrink away in fear. The Apple Tree is a beautiful shop (if you haven't been in - it's a real treat and Teri treats everyone like a favorite guest) and we are lucky to have it here in Eagle River. This was probably just a rare, isolated event and will likely never happen again. I urge my neighbors not to cower in fear, but to uplift and support those in our community who are making life here a better place.
