Howery wins Mid Summer Masher mountain bike race at Mirror Lake

James Howery won the inaugural Mid Summer Masher mountain bike race at the Chugach Mountain Bike Riders trails at Mirror Lake on Sunday.

Howery claimed victory in the Expert Men class race, turning the fastest laps on three of the race’s four laps. Each lap around the course covered four miles and included 571 feet of climbing and 575 feet of descent. Howery completed his four laps in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 20.8 seconds to beat James Stull by more than three minutes. Brad Manderfeld was third.

A total of 34 riders competed in nine classes of racing.

Mark Keller won the two-lap Sport Men class in 1:12:08.2, followed by James Fredrick and Bryant Davis in a class that included an event-high 14 finishers. Cadence Stull won the Sport Women’s class in 1:22:29.5 as the only entrant in the class.

Other class winners included Jay Noreen (Masters Men), Clint Hodges (Single Speed Men), Kate Brown (Women’s Fat Bike), Carson Humphrey (Junior Men), Will Mangini (Beginner Men) and Christine Meier (Beginner Women).
