Chinooks snap six-game losing streak to open Mulcahy swing

Friday, July 5, 2019 - 16:00

Lee Jordan Field wasn’t particularly friendly to the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, which went just 2-6 during an eight-game homestand that ended with four straight losses June 25-30.

Chugiak-Eagle River fell to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 9-0 on June 25, then dropped three in a row to the Anchorage Bucs on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday in Chugiak.

The Chinooks pounded 12 hits in their 17-12 loss to the Bucs Thursday, with Joe Brazil collecting three base hits and Mason Corbett, Dylan Gardner, Jess Davis and Ethan English picking up two each.

The losses dropped Chugiak-Eagle River to 6-15 in the ABL through the end of June, though the team remained just one game behind the Peninsula Oilers for fourth place in the league as both teams posted 2-8 records over their past 10 games.

Chugiak-Eagle River was scheduled to play seven straight road games to start July, facing the Mat-Su Miners July 1 at Hermon Brothers Field at the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer.

The team began six straight games at Mulcahy Stadium against the Pilots and Bucs with a 6-2 win Wednesday over the Pilots to snap a siz-game losing streak. J Paul Fullerton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Chinooks, who improved to 7-17 overall.

Chinooks among league leaders

Metropolitan State University Denver senior Zach Sundine struck out three batters in 4 ⅔ innings to increase his Alaska Baseball League strikeout total to a league-best 27 over 25 innings pitched. Through his first five ABL appearances for the Chinooks this season, Sundine has posted a 2.88 ERA, best on the staff and seventh in the ABL.

Two-way standout Daniel Freeman of Columbia State Community College has had a solid season pitching and hitting, posting 13 RBIs in 18 at bats at the plate and a 2.25 ERA over eight innings pitched.
