Local running stars to compete at elite end-of-season meet

Several local athletes are competing in the Brian Young Track and Field Invitational Friday and Saturday at West High.

The two-day event features some of the best high school athletes in the state and will feature numerous athletes who won state championships last week in Palmer.

Among the locals entered in the men’s meet are Chugiak sprinter Jeremiah Wilson, Ealge River middle distance runner Carter Gladwill, Chugiak middle distance runner Jacob Lestina, Chugiak distance runners Hyrum Nelson and Will Gerlach, Eagle River distance runner Michael Olson, Chugiak hurdlers Logan Mathieu and Justin Nevells and Chugiak thrower Kenny Huffer. Nevells will also compete in the long jump.

The women’s meet will include Chugiak sprinters Shaylee Griffin and Reilly Hall, Chugiak distance runner Breanna Day, Chugiak hurdler Maria Peters. Griffin will also compete in the long jump. The CIC team will also include Eagle River jumper Chloe Garber, who will compete in the long, triple and high jump.

Field events start at noon each day with running events slated to begin at 1 p.m.

The Brian Young is being contested at West for the first time this year. The elite invitational will also include the likes of East sprinter Colton Herman, who broke the state record in the 100 meters last week, and Delta’s Hailey Williams, the Division II girls Athlete of the Meet at state.
