It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

Chugiak stormed through the Blue and Gold Fastpitch Softball Tournament at the Albrecht Fields in Anchorage over the weekend, rallying from an opening-round loss with four straight wins to claim the tournament championship.

The Mustangs started with a 3-2 loss to South in Thursday’s tournament opener. On Friday, Chugiak bounced back with a 2-1 win over Homer, then posted a 12-0 victory over Wasilla in the opening round of bracket play Saturday.

The Mustangs then won a showdown against rival Eagle River in Saturday’s quarterfinals thanks to one big inning, scoring three runs in the fifth after the Wolves fought back to tie the game at 1-1 the previous inning.

Chugiak starter Kylie Seagroves gave up one run in six innings pitched to lead the Mustangs. Seagroves also had two hits and an RBI for Chugiak, which also got a pair of hits from Bethany Stockburger. Avery Brown struck out five batters in 5 2/3 innings for Eagle River, which got two hits from Serenity Argudin.

Eagle River opened the tournament with back-to-back wins in pool play, getting a 9-0 win over Service on Thursday and knocking off the South JV 8-7 on Friday to earn a bye into Saturday’s bracket round play.

Chugiak blasted Dimond 10-2 in the tournament semifinals Saturday before capping the tournament with a revenge victory over South, handing the Wolverines their only loss in the tournament’s championship game.

Chugiak and Eagle River played CIC games Monday and Tuesday, but scores weren’t available when the Star went to press. Check alaskastar.com for the latest results.
