Chugiak clamped down on defense in the second half to claim third place at the Dimond Lady Lynx Shootout girls basketball tournament with a 41-27 win over Bartlett Saturday at Dimond High.

The Mustangs outscored the Golden Bears 14-2 in the third quarter and held Bartlett to just 10 second-half points to turn a tight game into a blowout.

Layla Beam and Ari Lewis each scored eight points to lead a balanced Chugiak attack that got seven from Chasity Horn, five from Averie Carlos and four each from Cheyenne Young and Eva Palmer.

The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 41-38 overtime win over Lathrop Wednesday, then knocked off West 56-46 on Thursday to reach the Gold Bracket semifinals.

Against West, Horn poured in a game-high 16 points to lead the Mustangs, who also got 12 from Young and 10 from Caitlin Wachmann.

Chugiak fell just short of reaching Saturday’s title game, losing 51-48 to ACS on Friday. The Mustangs led by three heading into the fourth quarter, but were held to just two field goals in the final eight minutes.

Horn had 13 points and Palmer added 12 in the loss for Chugiak, which also got eight each from Young and Wachmann.
