Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information office. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
On Jan. 20 at around 8 p.m., an APD officer attempted to pull over a blue Ford Crown Victoria for allegedly driving 88 mph in a 65-mph zone on the Glenn Highway. Police said that when the officer turned on his lights, the driver of the Crown Vic sped up and tried to pass another driver but instead lost control and flipped the vehicle after hitting the ditch. Police said the driver, 27-year-old Christopher A. Novotny of Anchorage, was uninjured in the crash. He was arrested for operating under the influence.
Woman charged with resisting arrest
On Jan. 26 at around 3 a.m. police were called to a residence on Old Eagle River Road for a report of a fight. When they arrived, police met with a woman who said she went to the home of Jada G. McKenzie, 20, of Eagle River. Police said the two got into an argument during which McKenzie allegedly strangled the other woman. Police said the victim had visible injuries.
When they tried to speak with McKenzie, officers said she was “combative” and failed to follow their instructions. She allegedly resisted handcuffing and while in the back of a police car was able to slip free of one of the handcuffs and started banging on the window. Police said Mc-
Kenzie was removed from the car, taken to the ground and handcuffed again. She was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest.
Conflicting accounts given in alleged assault
On Jan. 19, police received a call from an out-of-state resident who requested a welfare check on a female friend. Police contacted a man and woman at a residence on Cam Island Circle. Police said the woman was intoxicated and said she had been assaulted, but the man — who police said was not drunk — gave them a different version of the incident. Police said because they had no independent witnesses and there were conflicting versions of the alleged assault, they could not make an arrest. The woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation and released.

Mother reports drug deal
On Jan. 23, at around 9 a.m., police were contacted by a staff member at Gruening Middle School. No charges had been filed as of Monday.
