Chugiak 7th at West hoops tourney; Mustangs and Wolves to play Friday

Chugiak claimed seventh place at the Alaska Airlines Classic basketball tournament Saturday with a 54-49 win over Monroe Catholic at West High.

The Mustangs used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to seal the victory, outscoring the Rams 21-15 in the final eight minutes.

Owen Lewis led a balanced Chugiak offense with 13 points, Jackson Wall had 12 and Austin Harr added 10.

Chugiak led 26-19 at halftime before Monroe rallied to tie the game heading into the fourth.

Izak Lohrke scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Rams.

Eagles knock off Chugiak in opener

Robert Sheldon scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Wall added 14 in the Mustangs’ opening round 74-57 loss to the host Eagles Thursday.

The game was played in front of a massive crowd, as both West High and Romig Middle School students were let out of school early to attend the game.

Austin Harr added nine points and grabbed six rebounds for the Mustangs.

Kings splash Mustangs

Chugiak dropped its second game of the tournament 83-63 to Ketchikan Friday.

Wall scored 18 points and Sheldon had 14 for Chugiak, which also got nine from Lewis.

Chris Lee scored 31 points and had seven rebounds for the Kings.

Local teams set for showdown

Chugiak and Eagle River will face each other for the first time on Friday, Feb. 1 at the Wolves’ Den in Eagle River. The girls game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with the boys contest to follow.

Games called off, rescheduled

The Jan. 25 Cook Inlet Conference boys and girls basketball games scheduled for Jan. 25 have been rescheduled to Feb. 9 due to Friday’s weather-related school closure.

The weather also forced the cancelation of Friday’s planned Wasilla vs. Chugiak girls basketball game. The game has not been rescheduled.

Teams returned to CIC play Tuesday, Jan. 29, with Chugiak hosting Dimond and Eagle River traveling to Bartlett.
