Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information office. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
On Jan. 15 at around 11:18 p.m. police were called to a residence on Whirlaway Road for a report of an assault. According to police, Tyler J. Skeel, 39, of Eagle River allegedly got into an argument with his mother when she refused to give him a ride to the store. Police said Skeel yelled at the woman, pulled her hair and struck her in the face several times. He also allegedly knocked things over in the living room and broke a door frame.
Police said Skeel then went into his teen daughter’s bedroom, began yelling at her and “tore apart” her room and his own. He then allegedly stole cash and gift cards from his daughter and left the house.
Police said Skeel returned to the home while officers were searching for him. Police returned to the home and arrested Skeel on charges of third-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree theft. As of Tuesday, Jan. 22 Skeel remained in jail on a $3,000 cash performance bond.
Crash leads to gun arrest
On Jan. 13 police responding to a vehicle crash on the Glenn Highway arrested a 50-year-old Wasilla man on charges of weapons misconduct and operating under the influence.
According to APD, David G. Ballard was driving north on the Glenn. Police said Ballard was “paying attention to an unrelated crash” in the other lane and in the process rear-ended the driver in front of him.
Officers on the scene said Ballard appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. When he reached into his vehicle to retrieve his wallet, police said they saw a handgun in a holster in the car.
Ballard was arrested and charged with operating under the influence and being drunk while in possession of a firearm.
Stolen vehicle recovered before it’s reported stolen
On Jan. 11 APD received a report that a 2001 Chevy Tahoe had been stolen from a driveway on Eleonora Street overnight. The owner said he did not report the vehicle stolen right away because he thought his girlfriend had it. As it turned out, police said the vehicle had been found abandoned the previous day in Eagle River and impounded by police for safekeeping.
Citizen call results in DUI arrest
On Jan. 12 at around 3:08 a.m. police received a call about a black BMW parked next to the Tesoro gas station in Eagle River with a man who appeared to be intoxicated behind the wheel. Police arrived and arrested Jeramy M. Tester, 25, of Chugiak for operating under the influence.

On Jan. 14 at around 10:29 p.m. an off-duty APD officer driving on the Glenn Highway in his patrol car spotted a pickup truck allegedly weaving and failing to maintain its lane. The officer stopped the vehicle and police said Michael A. Peterson, 41, of Eagle River was arrested for operating under the influence.
On Jan. 14 at around 10:16 a.m. police were notified that a Chugiak High student reported getting sick after smoking marijuana before school. The student was transported by medics for evaluation, police said.

On Jan. 18 at around 1:08 a.m. police were called to Yellowstone Drive for a report of two teen sisters fighting. Police said both had minor injuries but they had no cause to determine who was the aggressor; no charges were filed and the girls were separated for the night.
On Jan. 18 at around 12:45 p.m. police said they responded to Chugiak High for a report of an assault. According to police, a student said he’d been assaulted by his father at home before coming to school.
