Wolves fall just short in opening round of Alaska Prep Shootout

Ryan Adkins had a game-high 29 points but it wasn’t enough as Eagle River dropped a 76-73 decision to Barrow in overtime Thursday in the opening round of the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High.

The Whalers led 27-26 at halftime in a game that turned into a shootout in the second half. By the time the dust settled, Barrow had 14 3-pointers and the Wolves had nailed 10 — including eight by Adkins.

Brandon Matthews scored 20 points for the Whalers and hit five treys, Anthony Fruean had 18 points (including four triples) and Jefferson Nobleza scored 15 and hit three 3’s.

Barrow outscored Eagle River 8-5 in the overtime period. The Wolves were stymied by fouls in the extra period, with Eagle River whistled for three offensive fouls in the four-minute overtime.

Javan Walker had 13 points for the Wolves, who got 11 from Bryson Rollman and nine from Sterling Retzlaff.

Eagle River will play at 3 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s Kenai Central vs. Valdez contest.
