Jackson Wall led all scorers with 15 points as a young Chugiak squad ran away from Tikigaq Thursday night in the first round of the season-opening Cougar Tipoff Basketball Tournament at Service High.

“This will be a whole new team for me,” said Chugiak head coach Jocquis Sconiers, who noted many of the Mustangs were playing their first varsity game Thursday.

Sconiers said this year’s team features just four upperclassmen — two seniors and two juniors — along with eight sophomores.

“We’re very young,” he said.

Wall shot 4-for-7 from behind the arc and Walter Buck scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field for Chugiak, which also got eight points each from Jared Parks, Marques Andrews, Zach Cole and Austin Harr. Andrews had a game-high nine rebounds for Chugiak, which outscored Tikigak 21-4 in the third quarter after taking a 27-21 lead into halftime.

Newcomer Robert Sheldon — a transfer from Noatak who led the Lynx to a Class 1A state title in March — scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and dished three assists in his Chugiak debut.

Kaesyn Hill scored 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds for Class 2A Tikigaq.

Chugiak will face East in the semifinals at 6:15 p.m. at Service. The Thunderbirds beat Seward 77-25 Thursday. Also Thursday, Bartlett beat Homer 64-39 and Service knocked off Redington 74-16.

“Tomorrow’s going to be a true test,” Sconiers said.

The Eagle River boys opened their season Thursday at the Grace Christian Classic, but scores were not immediately available. The Eagle River girls also tipped off their season Thursday in a nonconference endowment game against Homer at Eagle River. That score was also not immediately available.
