Locals athletes, events nominated for Alaska Sports Hall
A number of locals are in contention for the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame, which is currently soliciting votes for this year’s class.
Among the nominees this year are Eagle River’s Bobby Hill, a Special Olympics powerlifter; Corey Cogdell, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist in trapshooting; Pam Dreyer, who won a bronze medal in women’s hockey as a goalie for Team USA at the 2006 Winter Olympics; and the late Stan Brown, who helped start the state’s Pop Warner Association (and for whom the Stan Brown Memorial Field at Lions Park is named after).
Also nominated in the “Moments” category is the “Heave You Couldn’t Believe,” Chugiak’s game-winning pass from Jim Simmons to Kirby Rollison in the Mustangs’ 1988 state football championship game win over Soldotna. And nominated as an “Event” is the Crow Pass Crossing, an annual summertime wilderness race from Girdwood to the Eagle River Nature Center.
Voting is open through the end of the month. To vote or see a complete list of nominees, visit the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame website at alaskasportshall.com.
