Mustangs, Wolves grapple at North/South tourney
A pair of 189-pounders led Chugiak and Eagle River Saturday at the North/South Wrestling Tournament at Wasilla High School.
The Mustangs’ Daniel Niebles reached the finals to post the top performance by a local wrestler at the 13-team tournament, while Eagle River’s Andrew Hamilton finished fourth to lead the Wolves.
Niebles lost to Palmer’s Levi Farris 11-2 in the finals. He reached the championship match by pinning Kodiak’s Dylan Parker in the quarterfinals and beating Colony’s Jamar Toston in the semis.
Hamilton lost to Toston in the quarterfinals before rallying with a major decision over Kodiak’s Dylan Parker in the consolation round and a forfeit victory over Soldotna’s Hudson Metcalf to reach the third-place match, where Toston took a second win of the day over Hamilton when the Eagle River wrestler suffered a third-period injury.
Eagle River’s Michael Caywood pinned Palmer’s Gunner Aderman to reach the semifinals at 215 pounds, where he was pinned by Soldotna’s Aaron Faletoi in the first round. Caywood then lost a heartbreaker in the consolation round as Wasilla’s Jeffrey Palmer earned a 1-0 win to end Caywood’s tournament.
Chugiak’s Tristan Petrykievicz went 2-2 at 135 pounds and Talon Clifford was 1-2 at 152 for the Mustangs, who brought six wrestlers to the tournament and finished 10th. Eagle River’s three wrestlers finished 12th.
Colony and South each finished with 178.5 points to tie for the team title. Wasilla was third.
