POLICE BRIEFS: Walmart shoplifter punches employee, runs away

Trouble at Walmart

On Oct. 26 at around 3:40 p.m., police received a call about a robbery at Walmart. Police said a store employee confronted a man who was allegedly shoplifting.

“A struggle ensued,” police said.

According to APD, the man punched the Walmart employee in the face and ran off. The employee suffered an injury to his left eye. A case is pending, police said.

Man arrested for drinking

On Oct. 22 at around 4:18 p.m., police got a call about two people who got into an argument while drinking. Police said there was no physical fight, but one of the people — Gregory A. Franklin, 54, of Eagle River — was not supposed to be drinking because he was on probation. Franklin was taken to the Anchorage Jail.

Pickup speeds away on Glenn

On Oct. 24 at around 11:11 a.m., an APD officer tried to stop a black Chevy pickup on the Old Glenn Highway for allegedly having tape obscuring its rear license plate. Police said that when the officer turned on his lights, the truck sped up to over 90 mph. The officer turned on his siren, but the truck reportedly began passing vehicles dangerously and the officer ended the chase.

Man arrested for domestic violence

On Oct. 25 at around 8:43 p.m., police were called to Crested Butte Drive, where Jonathan M. Stone, 29, of Eagle River was arrested for assault after he allegedly slapped his girlfriend in the face, which police said caused her eye to swell.

Conex lock cut

On Oct. 26 at around 11:11 a.m., police received a report that a lock on a Conex trailer on South Birchwood Loop had been cut. Police said they were unable to contact the owner and didn’t know if anything had been taken.

Street biker gets away

On Oct. 27 at around 2:05 p.m., an APD officer reportedly saw a motorcycle speeding on the Glenn Highway. Police said that when the officer caught up to the speeder, the driver was “doing a wheelie.”

Police said the rider set the bike back on two wheels, looked back at the officer and sped away. The officer ended the chase when the rider took the Hiland Road exit and “blew through a stop sign.”

Man arrested for warrants

On Oct. 29 at around midnight, police contacted Noah Murphy, 22, of Anchorage at a location on Eagle River Road in relation to an altercation. Police said no charges were filed, but Murphy was arrested on three outstanding warrants, including two felony warrants.

Man arrested for driving wrong way on Glenn

On Oct. 29 at around 2:11 a.m., police received several calls about a yellow Jeep that was driving outbound in the inbound lanes of the Glenn Highway. Police said they located the vehicle, pulled it over and arrested the driver, Clifford L. Short Jr., 58, of Kotzebue, for operating under the influence and reckless driving.
