Eagle River and Chugiak each suffered lopsided losses in their final regular-season football games Friday and Saturday, but both teams’ seasons are still alive after both advanced to the state playoffs next weekend.

Despite falling 50-7 to nonconference South, the Wolves wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Division II Northern Lights Conference thanks to a 72-24 Soldotna win Saturday over Kenai Central.

“Today was an opportunity to prepare for the postseason and do a few different things,” Wolves wideout Mason Piper told the Anchorage Daily News after the game. “Everyone is still so happy to be where we are right now.”

Piper caught five passes for 99 yards and a touchdown for the Wolves, who trailed 13-7 at halftime but fell victim to a second-half onslaught by the Division I Wolverines. South finished the regular season 4-4.

Eagle River will face Railbelt Conference champion Saturday at Palmer High in the Division II semifinals, a game that will mark the team’s first playoff appearance in school history.

Mustangs fall at Colony

Chugiak wrapped its regular season with a 51-0 Chugach Conference football loss to Colony in Palmer.

The Mustangs finished the regular season 1-7 and 1-3 in the Chugach, but will still play next week in the first round of the Division I state playoffs after wrapping up the fourth playoff spot in the five-team conference.

Tyler Huffer led Chugiak with 38 yards on 16 carries Friday. Kody Carlson caught four passes for the Mustangs from Quentin Wilson, who was 10-of-23 for 99 yards.

Chugiak will play East in the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs lost to the Thunderbirds 47-0 in the season-opener at Huffer Stadium in Chugiak.
