Chugiak Post 33 remains in solid playoff position as the Alaska Legion Baseball AA season nears its homestretch, while Eagle River is still in the hunt for one of the National Division’s three automatic playoff berths.
Through Monday, July 9, Chugiak was 8-3 in the league and 12-9 overall, just two points behind first-place Juneau and four clear of third-place West. Eagle River was 4-7 (23 points) and 8-14 overall. The league awards four points for a tie, two for a tie and one for a loss.
Teams have played in several tournaments over the past couple weeks, with Chugiak most recently participating in the BP Invitational July 5-8, where the Mustangs went 1-3. Chugiak got some consolation in the fact its only win came over South on the tournament’s opening day; the Wolverines went on to win the tourney, beating Excelsior, Minnesota on July 8 to become the first Alaska team to win the tourney since 2010.
Upcoming games include an Eagle River vs. Chugiak clash on Wednesday, July 11, at Oberg Field in Chugiak. Eagle River will then travel to Southeast for games against Juneau, while Chugiak heads north to the Interior to face North Pole and Fairbanks.
The regular season ends July 24, with the playoffs set for July 27-31 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
