Mustangs go 3-1, Wolves 1-3 to open CIC baseball season
Chugiak opened the Cook Inlet Conference baseball season with wins in three of its first four games, scoring three straight wins over Service, Eagle River and East after a season-opening loss to South.
Sam Hall gave up three hits in 5 1/3 innings on May 8 at Mulcahy Stadium to pace the Mustangs’ 12-0 win over East. Justin Nevells went 3-for-5 with a trio of RBIs.
The Mustangs fell 7-2 to the Wolverines in the May 1 opener, then hammered Service 11-0 on May 3 behind a six inning one-hitter from Billy Smith.
On May 5, the Mustangs pushed their all-time CIC record to 13-2 against Eagle River with a 5-1 win over the Wolves at Mulcahy Stadium. Ian Frizelle and JustinNevells combined for a three-hitter for Chugiak, which got hits from seven different players.
Wolves start 1-3
Sterling Retzlaff went 2-for-3 for Eagle River against Chugiak as the Wolves dropped to 0-3. Eagle River also fell 2-1 to Service on May 1 and lost a 3-1 decision to South on May 2.
Eagle River (1-3) rallied for its first CIC win of the season on May 7, getting an 11-0 win over Bartlett behind the combined pitching efforts of Sterling Retzlaff and Brendan Miles and the combined hitting efforts of nearly the entire lineup. Retzlaff gave up one hit in three innings while striking out five and Miles didn’t allow a hit and struck out three Golden Bears in two innings. Nine different players had hits for Eagle River, including two each from Retzlaff, Miles, Chase McGraw, Aaron Davis and Deven Wesolowski.
