The Chugiak girls basketball team clamped down on defense to turn a close game into a runaway Tuesday on opening night of the 2018 Cook Inlet Conference basketball season.

After building a narrow 22-20 lead into halftime against West, the Mustangs allowed just two third-quarter points to run away with a 48-33 win over the Eagles.

Chasity Horn scored 17 points to lead Chugiak (1-0 Cook Inlet Conference), which got 13 from Eva Palmer and 12 from Patricia Houser.

Chugiak held West to just three field goals in the second half.

Dymond Fields scored eight points for the Eagles (0-1), who got seven each from Alyx Bowen and Gillian Huss.

Chugiak heads to the Interior this weekend for nonconference games at West Valley (Jan. 12) and North Pole (Jan. 13).

Wolves drop home opener

East flew past Eagle River for an 87-15 Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball rout at the Wolves’ Den.

Chyna Finley scored 12 points for the Wolves (0-1), who travel to South Jan. 16 for a 6 p.m. clash against the Wolverines.

BOYS

East 59, Eagle River 54

A late Eagle River rally came up short as the Wolves dropped a 59-54 Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball game to East Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Eagle River High.

Jean Gonzalez and Jacob Thompson each scored eight points in the final quarter as the Wolves (0-1) rallied from a 10-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Gonzalez led the Wolves with 15 points, Thompson had 14 and Bryson Rollman added eight for the Wolves, who fell to 0-1 in the CIC.

Eagle River is at South Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

West 60, Chugiak 45

West pulled away late and cruised to a 60-45 Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball win at Chugiak Tuesday night.

The Mustangs trailed 25-12 at halftime but stormed back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to four points on a turnaround jumper by Ty Carlos midway through the period. That’s as close as the Mustangs would get, as the Eagles finished the quarter on a 19-4 run to quash Chugiak’s comeback.

Tyler Trevino led a balanced Chugiak (0-1) attack with 10 points, Stephen Matthews and Hunter Harr added eight each, Adam Huffman had six and Carlos added five.

Luka Wal scored a game-high 13 points for West (1-0), which got 11 from Devin Mong and scoring from nine different players.

Chugiak will play in the Dimond Prep Shootout, which runs Jan. 11-13 at Dimond High.
