LETTER: Help for prison rehab program needed

Friday, December 22, 2017 - 13:18

Dear friends,

Some of the most rewarding times in my life have come through seeing lives changed. As a chaplain for the Transformational Living Community (TLC), I have experienced many men who have surrendered their lives to Christ and have done the hard work of transformation.

The TLC moved to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in Eagle River in May, 2018. Twenty-four TLC programmers and 11 TLC grads are currently enrolled in the 12-month programs. The goal is to eventually build up to 78 programmers in the TLC, graduate TLC, and Christian Education.

TLC is an intensive Christian Therapeutic Community where accountability is key. Classes focus on creating lasting change by examining attitudes and actions and using that understanding to write a Relapse Prevention Plan. The Monday night mentor program has made a huge contribution to the encouragement of the men. The recidivism rate for the TLC graduates at 33 percent is about half of what it is in the general population of Alaska Correctional Centers. Through the power of Christ in the TLC, lives are changed.

A few weeks ago, Warren, one of our men, collapsed and passed away in class. It really shook our TLC family, as his life had had a deep impact within the TLC as he was a man of humility, honor, and generosity. Warren made a commitment to follow Christ shortly after entering the TLC program, and was continually growing in his relationship with God.

In September, I became the TLC director. South Central Foundation has been a huge supporter of the TLC program and will be funding this position through August, 2018. After that we will be relying on other private donations. Without adequate funding for this position, the men’s TLC program is in jeopardy.

A recent graduate stated, “What I have learned and what TLC is doing and has done in my life is priceless.”

If you are able to partner with Alaska Correctional Ministries in this needed program, please consider making a monthly commitment to support the men’s TLC at Hiland. Your check can be made to Alaska Correctional Ministries and write “Men’s TLC Hiland Mountain” on your check memo line.

Checks can be sent to :
