Prep hoops season gets underway
The 2017-18 high school basketball season officially got underway last week, with local teams already registering impressive early season wins.
The Chugiak girls opened the season by knocking off perennial powerhouse Wasilla in a Saturday, Dec. 16 showdown in the Mat-Su. The Mustangs rolled to a 30-13 halftime lead and hung on from there, getting a game-high 18 points from Chasity Horn to lead three players in double figures. Ariana Lewis added 11 points for Chugiak, which got 10 from Patricia Houser and six from Caitlin Wachmann.
The Chugiak boys opened their season with a successful road trip, reaching the finals of the West Valley Tip-Off Tournament in Fairbanks. The Mustangs posted back-to-back wins over Lathrop and Kodiak before falling 53-51 to the host Wolfpack in the final.
The Eagle River boys and girls opened the season Dec. 14 with a pair of games against Palmer. The girls fell 55-32, while the boys lost 60-41. The Eagle River girls also fell to South on Dec. 16, 36-29.
Eagle River bounced back Monday, Dec. 18, with both teams notching nonconference victories over visiting Houston.
In the opener, Chyna Finley scored nearly outscored Houston on her own, pouring in a game-high 17 points as the Wolves broke into the win column with a 36-19 win over the Hawks. Camryn Perry added eight for Eagle River, which also got 10 rebounds and five steals from Grace Harder.
In the nightcap, Ryan Adkins led a game-high 21 points to lead the Eagle River boys to an 82-39 win over the Hawks.
