Chugiak hockey team posts second straight blowout win
Chugiak posted its second straight lopsided Cook Inlet Conference win Tuesday, Nov. 28, routing East 11-1 at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.
The Mustangs improved to 3-2-0 in the CIC and have outscored their last two opponents by a combined 21-2 after thrashing winless Bartlett before the Thanksgiving break.
Chugiak captain Daniel Casey led the Mustangs with three goals and two assists, while Luke Momblow also had a five-point night with two goals and three helpers. Also scoring for the Mustangs were Grant Epple (two goals, assist), Wyatt Young (goal, two assists), Josh Bonetta (two assists), Jacob Kosinski (goal), Noah Denny (two assists), George Kerr (three assists) and Riley Lindberg (assist).
Tanner Holta made 18 saves for Chugiak, which outshot East 58-19. Lane Fox stopped 43 shots of 52 shots for the T-birds (0-5-0) before being giving way to Lanaya Braniff, who stopped four of six.
Having run through the league’s weakest squads with ease, the Mustangs will take a significant step up in class Saturday, when they’ll face South at 5 p.m. at Ben Boeke. The Wolverines (7-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 CIC) are the top ranked team in Alaska according to akhockey.com, and have outscored their opponents by a combined 49-5 this season.
