Eagle River women shine at Kenai River Marathon
Three Eagle River had a successful Kenai Peninsula road trip over the weekend.
Eagle River’s Sara Kennedy finished second in the women’s division of the Kenai River Marathon, a 26.2-mile race that makes a loop encompassing the Twin Cities of Kenai and Soldotna.
Joining Kennedy atop the leader boards Saturday were Eagle River’s Victoria Oxentenko, who was third in the half marathon, and Morgan Ekemo, who won the 5-kilometer race.
Kennedy completed the marathon in 3 hours, 58 minutes, 59.2 seconds, more than 29 minutes behind winner Samatha Wilson of Anchorage and just 5.7 seconds ahead of Anchorage’s Elizabeth Knapp.
Only 11.7 seconds separated the top three women’s finishers in the half marathon, with Oxentenko falling just short of the pace set by winner Annie Ridgely of Homer, who competed the 13.1-mile course in 1:39:56.0.
Ekemo had little trouble in the 5-kilometer field, finishing in 20 minutes, 52 seconds to beat second-place Amelia Hall of Soldotna by more than three and a half minutes.
